A little History
With modest beginnings Grace Community Church of Amarillo began as a non-denominational Bible church in 1985 under the leadership of Pastor Bill Gehm. With about 40 members and the philosophy of training, equipping and unleashing the laity to minister outside the “fortress mentality” of the church, Grace launched into Amarillo.
While Grace Church was located in the YWCO building close to downtown it grew and was able to reach a community that most churches did not. In the “90’s” Grace relocated to West Amarillo Blvd. to reach a more diverse and widely spread community for Jesus. It was there that it became evident the Lord had a new direction for Grace Church. Grace became part of the Calvary Chapel movement, which opened many new doors and opportunities for ministry, as well as redefining its philosophy of ministry to that of Calvary Chapel. Still under the leadership of Pastor Bill Gehm, now Grace Church Calvary Chapel Amarillo has relocated to its present location on the corner at Plains and Western. After spending a season in “the tent” on the parking lot and then inside the building (yes a tent inside the building), the Lord made ready His people for the work ahead. An outbreak of revival, salvations and water baptism occurred in the summer of 2005, confirming His guidance for the right move at the right time. All of this was an answer to many prayers. Grace Church may have remodeled a building at Plains and Western, but God remodeled Grace Church at the same time. His story continues and Grace is thankful to be part of it, “To the Praise of His Glory”.
